7 Top Security Guard Gear You Need

If you are a security guard, then you know that you must carry lots of gear. If you are a good security guard, you know that the equipment you carry not only is there to protect yourself, but the property you are assigned to. Making sure you have the right equipment is important to perform efficiently.

Here are the top 7 pieces of equipment that security officers need to have:

1. Flashlight

A good flashlight is one of the most important pieces of equipment that a security guard can carry. Carrying the right kind of flashlight is needed even if you’re assigned to a day job. Certain scenarios may require some extra light to help you see such as a dark location.

A flashlight can also be used for protection. Purchasing a long heavy duty metal flashlight could be used as a striking device if needed.

Although there is no special training needed in order to carry a flashlight, there are training programs that you can enroll in that can teach you how to effectively use one in a combat situation.

2. Security Guard Baton (if permitted)

A security guard baton is another very important piece of equipment that every security guard should have to protect themselves. Most guards find that just having a baton on your belt is usually enough to make sure things stay calm.

Most states require you to complete a training course specialized for handling a baton before you can legally carry it.

3. Boots

Security guards are on their feet a lot, so a good pair of security guard boots is extremely important. A good pair of boots can make the difference between coming home with aches and pains, and coming home comfortable.

So, you must invest in a pair of durable boots which will last you a lifetime. A cheap pair will not only end up not doing your feet any good, but will also wear out and you’ll find yourself having to buy a new pair sooner than you want to.

6. A Note Pad and Pen

All security guards should carry a note pad and pen. At a minimum all security guards must observe and report while on duty.  As a result, all security guards should carry a pen and pad. Even when working a site that has computerized reporting systems, it is still important to carry a pen and pad as a backup.  If you observe anything strange or unusual during your shift, you can jot it down using the pen and pad.  As a security guard, you won’t be able to run back and add notes to your patrol log or enter things into a computer as they happened.  The pen and pad will allow you to note down any details to preserve your memory and allow you to accurately record the details in the official patrol log.  It is recommended that you use a notebook that is waterproof.  Here is a good one.

7. Heavy Gloves

Security guards should have heavy duty gloves as well as Latex gloves on hand. You will use the Latex gloves if you have to deliver first aid for any reason. The heavy duty gloves will protect your hands and allow you to get better grip on your baton and other gear. During the winter, the gloves will protect your hands from the cold if you work outside.
