Why Armed Guards Should Carry Backup (BUG) Gun

Most armed security officers don’t think to carry an additional gun (BUGs) on their person while out on duty. What they don’t think about is how inconvenient would it be if their weapon stopped working when they needed in a life or death situation?

Just like your car might break down while driving it, guns are machines as well, and just like that car letting you down, so can your gun. Let’s also consider a gun could fall out of your holster while chasing after a thief, or for whatever your primary weapon goes down, a backup could mean the difference between living and dying.

Consider it an insurance policy against your primary weapon going down.

What kind of backup should you have?

Take stock of your personal equipment and training, and make sure you’re squared away. It’s important to have a reliable backup to carry on duty and carry it in a manner that protects it and gives you support side access. So, what’s the best BUG to have?

Some officers carry a smaller gun like, a 380, but, it may be more logical to actually carry the same caliber as your primary. Why? It’s easier and more economical to keep bullets all the same. This way, all your bullets fit in all your guns. Example: if you carry a 9mm, then get another 9mm as backup.

Where should you carry your backup?

Most officers carry on opposite ankle in an ankle holster, or opposite chest side in a chest holster. There are many different kinds of holsters on the market. What kind that you wear depends on each person’s taste and comfort level.
