What Training Does a Family Protection Dog Need?

A family protection dog requires training from a professional that goes above and beyond regular training.  Most potential family protection dogs enter a program called Schutzhund, a German performance sport that assesses a dog’s workability and temperament; this is the same training most police and military dogs go through.

When you get your protection dog from a trainer, they will emphasize that a family protection dog needs to be well-rounded. It is not enough to have a dog trained in just protection work; a good trainer will put them through a high level of obedience to be safe around your family.

While there are many factors to consider before bringing a protection dog into your home, know that family protection dogs are an excellent investment in your family’s security. Choosing the right breed and training, your dog will be an asset and give you peace of mind.
