Registration is required for unarmed security guards working in Wisconsin . They are termed “private security persons’.
Requirements for unarmed security guards in Wisconsin:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Must be a United States citizen or legal alien
- Have good moral character
- Mentally competent
- No drug or alcohol use or dependence or distribution
- May be required submit to a drug test
- No felony convictions
- No disabilities that would prevent performance of duty
- Submit to criminal background check
- Electronic Fingerprinting
- Two forms of photo ID
- Passport photo
- Signed Release of information form for background check
Training:
Optional training would include:
- Role of Private Security
- Legal Aspects
- Patrol and Observation
- Incident Response
- Security Resources: Surveillance operation and documentation
- Customer Service Issues: Working with and addressing the public
- Report Writing
Armed Guard Training Requirements:
- An armed guard must hold a firearms permit. The firearms permit requires 36 hours of training, and the instructor must be Department-certified. Each firearms permit is agency-specific- guard who goes to work for another agency will need a new permit.
- The armed guard must complete six hours of refresher training to demonstrate continued proficiency.

The firearms permit is agency-specific. A guard who goes to work for another agency will need a new permit.
