In Vermont, you must possess a license to become an unarmed security guard. Licensing regulations are regulated by The Board of Private Investigative and Security Services. You must meet certain criteria before a license will be approved. Submission is done by the hiring company.
Requirements for unarmed security guards in Vermont:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Valid Social Security number
- Submit to criminal background check
- Driver’s License
- Finger print cards (1)
- Certificate of completion of 40-hours of classroom training
- Mentally competent
- No drug or alcohol use or dependence
- Must successfully pass a drug test
- No felony convictions
- Provide character references
- No disabilities that would prevent performance of duties
Training:
You must partake in a basic training conducted by a board-approved instructor with at least two years experience in the subject matter.

- Surveillance operation and documentation
- Report Writing
Armed Guard Requirements:
- An armed guard must be trained by a Vermont-licensed instructor
- Classroom instruction in safe handling of firearms and in legal responsibility
- 12 hours devoted to general firearm safety, use, and responsibility
- 4 hours devoted to the particular weapon that will be used on the job
- Classroom learning will be assessed through examination
- Shooting time at a qualifying range
An armed guard will need to requalify during each renewal period. The requalification course is to be at least six hours.
