A license is required for unarmed security guards in the state of Utah. This license needs to be renewed every two years. The Unarmed portion includes 24 hours of classroom instruction. The Utah Division of Occupational and Prof Licensing (DOPL) administers the licensing. A passing grade of 80% on the examination will be required to receive your certification.
Requirements for unarmed security guards in Utah:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Valid Social Security number
- Driver’s License
- Finger print cards (2) or electronic fingerprinting is accepted
- Certificate of completion of 24-hours of classroom training with a score of at least 80%
- Mentally competent
- Submit to criminal background check
- Have good moral character
- No drug or alcohol use or dependence
- Must successfully pass a drug test
- No felony convictions
- No disabilities that would prevent performance of duty

Armed Guard Requirements
An armed guard must be at least 18 and will need to complete an additional approved course. The course will include at least six hours of classroom instruction and six hours of range instruction. The student will need to pass both a final exam and a practical pistol course.
The armed guard will complete 16 hours of continuing firearms training every two years. This is in addition to the general continuing education requirements. The armed guard should receive four hours of training every six months.
