Security Guard Training in Tennessee (Unarmed/Armed)

Registration and license is required in Tennessee for an unarmed security guard. An unarmed guard registration is renewed every two years. Tennessee Private Protective Services makes some distinctions between guards or officers who work for security companies and those who work for proprietary organizations.

In order to be registered, there are certain criteria that you must meet.

Requirements for unarmed security guards in Tennessee:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Mentally competent
  • Have good moral Character
  • No drug or alcohol use or dependence
  • Must show proof of citizenship
  • No convictions in the last 5 years and that includes being on probation
  • No disabilities that would prevent performance of duty
  • Submit fingerprint cards (3) for background check
  • Complete training requirements

Training Requirements:

Four-hour course:

  1. Orientation
  2. Legal aspects and limitations
  3. Emergency procedures
  4. Duty requirements

Armed Guard Requirements:

  • Armed guards must be 21 years of age.
  • Have additional training requirements beyond those required for unarmed contract security employees.
  • Take an eight hour course that includes legal limitations of firearms usage, safety, maintenance, and handling.
  • You will also need four hours of marksmanship training.

Additional requirements:

  • An individual cannot work as an armed guard until possessing, at minimum, a conditional card.
  • Armed guards must complete refresher/ range training during each renewal period.
