Security Guard Training in Montana (Unarmed/Armed)

The state of Montana requires unarmed security guards to have a license. The hiring company must also train their unarmed guards.

Requirements for unarmed security guards in Montana:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must show proof of citizenship
  • Must successfully pass a FBI and Montana Dept. of Justice background check
  • Provide proof of training
  • Must be employed by a licensed security or proprietary company
  • Passport photo showing full face, head and shoulders
  • Submit application with all required information and fees

Training:

The company must provide training: A basic training conducted may include the following:

  • Role of security guards 
  • Legal powers and limitations 
  • Ethics and conduct (including Board rules) 
  • Patrolling and investigation 
  • Communication and public relations 
  • Observation and note taking 
  • Emergency response
  • Access control 
  • Evidence 
  • Statements 
  • Report writing

Armed Security Guard Requirements:

  • A security guard who will carry a firearm will need an additional permit.
  • Guard must complete a Board-approved course. Training may be provided by a Montana Certified Firearm Instructor (CFI) or a Montana POST-certified instructor.
