The state of Montana requires unarmed security guards to have a license. The hiring company must also train their unarmed guards.
Requirements for unarmed security guards in Montana:
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Must show proof of citizenship
- Must successfully pass a FBI and Montana Dept. of Justice background check
- Provide proof of training
- Must be employed by a licensed security or proprietary company
- Passport photo showing full face, head and shoulders
- Submit application with all required information and fees

- Role of security guards
- Legal powers and limitations
- Ethics and conduct (including Board rules)
- Patrolling and investigation
- Communication and public relations
- Observation and note taking
- Emergency response
- Access control
- Evidence
- Statements
- Report writing

Armed Security Guard Requirements:
- A security guard who will carry a firearm will need an additional permit.
- Guard must complete a Board-approved course. Training may be provided by a Montana Certified Firearm Instructor (CFI) or a Montana POST-certified instructor.
