Security Guard Training in Massachusetts (Unarmed/Armed)

Certification is not required in Massachusetts. However, here are some basic requirements that must be met:

Requirements for unarmed security guard in Massachusetts:

  • Must be at least 18 year old
  • Must be a United States citizen or registered resident alien
  • Drug testing
  • Successfully passing a background check

Training:

Useful training would include:

  • Role of security guards 
  • Legal powers and limitations 
  • Ethics and conduct (including Board rules) 
  • Patrolling and investigation 
  • Communication and public relations 
  • Observation and note taking 
  • Emergency response 
  • Access control 
  • Report writing 

Armed Security Guard Requirements:

  • Need a firearms license
  • Must be at least 21
  • Meet general fitness requirements
  • Must not have any mental illness
  • History of substance abuse or drunkenness less than 5 years.
  • No Felonies or serious misdemeanors (those that can incur a sentence of two years).
