Maryland requires you to be certified to become a security guard. An applicant for security guard agency can become certified through the company for which they are applying. Your application will go through that company and forwarded to the Secretary of State.
Basic Requirements for unarmed security guard in Maryland:
- Must be at least 18 year old
- Must be a United States citizen or registered resident alien
- Submit to a criminal background check
- Good character
- No felony convictions
- No misdemeanor convictions that have a direct bearing on fitness
- May be asked to submit to drug testing
Training:
Basic training may include the following:
- Role of security guards
- Legal powers and limitations
- Ethics and conduct (including Board rules)
- Patrolling and investigation
- Communication and public relations
- Observation and note taking
- Emergency response
- Access control
- Evidence
- Statements
- Report writing
Armed Guard Requirements:
- Need a handgun permit/ wear and carry permit
- Meet general fitness requirements and training requirements. The training program (16 hours) has to be approved by the Maryland State Police. Search for qualified instructors on the State Police website (https://emdsp.mdsp.org/verification)
- Need to shoot a qualifying round
- No misdemeanor convictions
- No criminal conviction
- No history of instability or violence
Some individuals will qualify for exemption based on law enforcement, military, or National Guard experience. They may also qualify for exemption from “wear and carry” training if they have completed other acceptable training through a registered handgun instructor or are handgun instructors themselves.
