To become a security guard in the state of Illinois, you must do is obtain a PERC Card, or Permanent Employee Registration Card. This card tells the State of Illinois you’ve passed certain background checks through a fingerprint submission process.

Requirements for PERC Card:
- At least 18 years of age to apply (for an unarmed security guard)
- Social security number
- A photo
- The appropriate security clearance documents.
Training Requirements
In addition to the PERC card, you will also be required to complete 20 hours of security guard training.
These classes can be taken at your local community college or at firms that are certified to provide security guard training.
Armed Security Guard Requirements:
- Armed security employees must be at least 21.
- A security employee who will carry a firearm will need to complete a 40-hour training course
- The prospective armed security employee can expect a written test and range test .
- The Illinois firearm training requirement can be waived on the basis of law enforcement training. If the training was completed out-of-state, the professional will need to submit detailed description.
- An individual who holds Illinois firearm instructor registration can also be granted a waiver.
