New Jersey Security Guard Training (Unarmed/Armed)

You must be registered with the State of New Jersey before you can be employed as a security officer.

An application can be filled out and filed on this security guard application form, where you will be then required to, under oath, provide:

  • Your name, residence and age which must be at least 18 years
  • Previous employers for the last 5 years
  • Confirmation that you have not been convicted of any disqualifying crimes or offenses through a routine background check via fingerprints.

Security Officer Official Rules and Regulations for New Jersey

Armed Security Guard Requirements:

  • Obtain a ‘pistol permit’ .
  • No criminal background, drug use, or mental illness.
  • The state requires a demonstration of safe handling and usage.

The required application is SD 642. It can be downloaded from the website of the New Jersey State Police (http://www.njsp.org/info/forms.html#firearms). It is generally also available from police stations. Three references will need to sign the form; the purpose is to verify that the applicant has good character and can display self-control. 

The applicant will provide evidence of required knowledge and a letter indicating need to carry a firearm.

  • Four small photographs
  • A consent to release mental health records
  • A $20 fee
